Yes, I know its march. But look how we celebrated

gifts for host family

showin' a little love.
Janelle and JG's Adventures with No Money: The Joal edition.
This is going to be the new fun thing we do, go to different towns in Senegal with $20 for the weekend. We got into a rusty bucket of a bus with a goat strapped to the roof and headed to Joal-Fatiou, a tiny seashell island where Senegal's first president was raised. For four hours (s'posed to take 2, max) the goat frantically scratched at the roof trying to escape and the bus was hit by a bus and never even got to joal. the driver lied! he was never planning to go to Joal at all so he kicked us off in some beach town on the coast.
"JG, do we wanna pay $160 for a glamorous villa in key west florida this weekend?"
"hell to the fuck no."
Saly, Senegal AKA Expensive Ugly French Tourist Town

So we hopped in a station wagon with 6 strangers and kept going.
On Joal-Fatiou there are seashells, a mosque, a church, pigs.. and that's it. No cars, no friction, and oh yeah, no ATMS. This is where we discovered how far $20 will take you and how overrated dinner is.
Rusty Bucket bus: $1.80 Soda water in Saly: $2 Kilo of bananas: $1 Tipping the orphans: 2 bananas Station Wagon ride: $1.20 Bed for the night: $10 Dinner (coffee, fanta and lots and lots of hot water): $1.50 Beer with sketchy hostel owner: Free Breakfast: Included The bread and hibiscus jelly our neighbors didn’t eat: Maybe some dignity.

mmm, dinner

sunset over the wooden bridge that connects Fatiou to Joal (ahemmm JG took this picture mmm..)

not pictured: Bar where innebriated rasta owner of the hostel drank with us, fatayah and artwork vendors, the giant red heart in the sky, old french man staying in the roof next door, us schooling him in wolof on the patio in front of his gorgeous young senegalese girlfriend, JG
